Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler star in "Mystery Movie," 2019 film from Netflix, which set a new viewer record in its first few days of release. If you're a mystery fan, you'll probably realize that the final scene almost begs the late 'honeymoon' couple to embark on an extended vacation aboard the Orient Express. As I said, it's a fun puff piece, not even to be compared to the same year's "Knives Out" as far as murder stories go. The expected hi-jinx and chases follow in due order, with a script that manages to affirm that the Butler did it, but for that, you'll have to watch the picture. You've seen this set-up before, and with all the usual suspects falling victim themselves, Nick and Audrey become the prime targets of French inspector de la Croix (Dany Boon).

The setting becomes the scene of the elderly Malcolm Quince's (Terence Stamp) changing of his will, with all the attendant relatives being dropped in favor of his new girlfriend (Shioli Kutsuna). As a frustrated police officer who failed the detective test three times, Nick Spitz (Sandler) and wife Audrey (Aniston), find themselves on a yacht in the Mediterranean via an invitation from wealthy playboy Charles Cavendish (Luke Evans). Basically it's a fluff piece built around a murder mystery with a varied cast of suspects who wind up getting knocked off themselves in due time. Which is not a criticism because I'm a lot older than both of them, so I get it. It's not really all that bad if one is amused by this kind of stuff and like the principals, who by the way, are showing their age a bit. You kind of know that the corona virus has taken it's toll when one is reduced to watching an Adam Sandler/Jennifer Aniston flick, having run out of more reasonable choices and picking this one out on Netflix so as not to waste too much time searching. The film aims to be an Agatha Christie pastiche but it fails. As both try to clear their names the bodies pile up further. French detective Inspector de la Croix inexplicably and without any evidence or motive decides Nick and Audrey are the main suspects. At a family gathering Uncle Quince (Terence Stamp) announces that he is leaving his entire fortune to his new wife and is then promptly murdered when the lights go out. It is more enticing than their coach holiday. On the plane Audrey meets Viscount Charles Cavendish (Luke Evans) who invites them to his luxury yacht. He does not this to his hairdresser wife Audrey (Jennifer Aniston.) When she mentions that she expects something more than a gift card for her anniversary, he books a vacation to Europe. Sandler plays New York beat cop Nick Spitz who once again fails his detective exams. There are more references to the Hay Fever drug Claritin than there are actual laughs. It does not get a one star rating because it does have a laugh or two. It was much better than this feeble effort.

Woody Allen and Diane Keaton have already starred in a murder mystery comedy. At least he got Netflix to give him and his family a holiday to Europe. The chemistry is good and these characters could be good as long as the writing is good.Īdam Sandler now looking old gets another lame script out from the bottom of the barrel to comply with his Netflix deal. The clues comes out of nowhere at the end and nobody cares about discovering the killer's identity. They're the new Hart to Hart if it's done right. Sandler and Aniston could be a new mystery solving team. I actually think that this would work better with a straight Agatha Christie murder mystery. They just need to make sure that they have a good story. I think they've found their sweet spot at this stage of their careers. I actually like Sandler and Aniston as a bickering middle age couple. Inspector de la Croix immediately sees the Spitzes as his prime suspects and Nick has to solve the case with his wife. It's a wild weekend of Clue characters and it's a murder mystery. He is murdered before he signs the new will. The family patriarch and Charles' uncle Malcolm Quince (Terence Stamp) announces that he's leaving his fortune to his new wife Suzi. She sneaks onto first class and encounters Viscount Charles Cavendish (Luke Evans) who invites the couple to a family gathering on his yacht. She pushes him to go on an European vacation. NYPD policeman Nick Spitz (Adam Sandler) can't quite pass the detective test for the third time and hides it from his wife Audrey (Jennifer Aniston).
